Pebbles come in a variety of colors and textures and add a dash of
uniqueness to the décor of a home. They can be found as natural and
artificial stones with either a smooth or rough finish. Their appearance
depends largely on the material from which they originate like granite, marble,
quartz or straight from the riverbed. When these smooth or jagged stones are
displayed the qualities like grains, streaks and colors become apparent.
These pebbles may be artificially polished, naturally smooth or made to a
specified shape.
When crushed glass is combined with a colorant, a wide range is
produced which can be used in areas like decorative paving, indoor landscaping
or planters. Glass marbles may be used instead of natural stones and are
made in different sizes, colors and designs. As they may be translucent, transparent or opaque, when light
reflects on them, it creates a beautiful sight for the eyes.
Depending on their use and location, pebbles may be from 5 cm to
30 cm in size. You can use the smaller sized ones to offset any other
type of décor, for example with a dry flower arrangement, at the base of a
bonsai plant or along with a fresh bouquet. The smooth variety can be
used in aquariums and for lining any body of water indoors as well as fountains. The sound of a
brook in natural surroundings can be reproduced by the sound of water splashing
over pebbles and has a wonderful soothing effect. If you want an ethnic
touch you could light a brass lamp on the floor and put some pebbles and fresh
flowers at its base.
When the theme is one of mingling the outdoors and the indoors,
stones are the right feature to unite the two. They can transform an open
verandah, a patio, an atrium, an indoor open courtyard, greenhouse and even
pathways. Colored pebbles, concrete and gravel may be combined to produce
an interesting effect without the mess created by using fine-grained sand.
Besides all these uses, pebbles can also be utilized in producing
decorative objects, such as patterns which can be pasted and framed to hang on
a wall. You could clad some sections of the wall with smooth or rough
stones for a dramatic effect or fill a glass jar with multicolored stones and
use it on the table. You could glue them on picture frames as borders and
on tables in patterns. A ceramic cistern filled with shells and stones
and covered by a glass top would make a side table with a difference and lend a
breath of the seaside indoors.
Another quaint idea is to place a handful of these stones in a cut
glass bowl to brighten up the top of a coffee table or at the centre of a
dining table coupled with fresh fruit. Even semi-precious stones of a
somewhat bigger size can be used alone as décor pieces and their glittering
effect would accent a table or a niche as they shine in their brilliance.
Pebbles which are so simple and yet very appealing could be used
in dining rooms, verandahs and living rooms to improve the quality of the space
and add beauty to interiors. They have the
multiple advantage of being fire resistant, go with any theme and can be used
to emphasize or complement the décor. They are mostly low cost and can enhance
any traditional or modern décor scheme.
